Mouth watering post!

March 13, 2012

Ovos moles (“Soft eggs”) are a local delicacy from Aveiro (Portugal) made of egg yolks and sugar. They have been a favorite dessert of the Portuguese for centuries. The tradition of manufacturing the product, which originated in convents, was maintained by ladies who had been educated in convents and who passed the secret from generation to generation.

A unique treat that pairs wonderfully with a Taylor’s 20 Year.  This pairing will be availabe from March 19th and all through Easter.

So, we hope that you have a happy (and sweet) Easter!

Note: European Commission has given “ovos moles” Protected Geographical Indication. This sweet of Aveiro has been the first Portuguese bakery/pastry product ever to win this label.

Press comments:

Steven Spurrier, Decanter August 2011 – “…superbly controlled spice and black cherry fruit, tight and elegant, fresh as well as rich, top potential 2019-2049.” 19.5 points

“ Pontos 19

Jamie Goode, Wineanorak.com, May 2011 – “Intense, vivid nose is spicy and dense with lovely bright aromatics, as well as some violet florality. The palate is rich and bold with lots of sweetness. Generous, with smooth, intense fruit and firm yet fine-grained tannins. Massive fruit and lovely structure. Brilliant.” 95–97/100

Jancis Robinson, Purple Pages, May 2011 – “Blackish purple. This, unusually, had the headiness of Fonseca 2009 on the nose and seemed more luscious and velvety than the Quinta da Vargellas Vinha Velha on the palate. Very rich, round and thrilling. Dense and pure. A bit of a schoolmaster in terms of straight back and firm structure. Very long, firm and thrilling – surely a long term bet with additional early charm, presumably from the exceptionally hot, dry vintage. “Score 18. Drink 2035-70

Will Lyons, The Wall Street Journal, May 2011 – “Dark black/purple in the glass, the nose is an intense, opulent marriage of spice and dark fruit. On the palate there is real power and again more fruit giving way to a refreshing, long length.”

Richard Mayson, richardmayson.com, May 2011 – “Deep, dark opaque; lovely opulent aromas, refined, scented and very pretty (not often I say this about a wine), in its first bloom of youth; broad, sweet and rich with fine peppery tannins, quite powerful yet gentle at the same time with a lovely sinewy, firm finish. Complete. “Score 18

Since last Monday the windows of the Tourist Information Centres have been dazzling tourists and residents.

The decor features picturesque images of rural life in the Douro region and also the harvest – which is about to start.

So, if you are in Porto do not forget to go to Rua Clube dos Fenianos, 25 where you can also get friendly help and advice on Porto and beyond.

Last but not least: we still do not have a date to start picking but stay tuned!
