Wine Tasting

Taylor’s standard Port experience comprises a tasting of Chip Dry, Late Bottled Vintage and Tawny 10 year old.

As the name suggests, Chip Dry,  has a drier, fruity taste, and is an unusual (and unusually good) aperitif, best served chilled. Or drink it as guests do at Quinta de Vargellas – poured over ice in a large glass, topped up with tonic, and topped with a leaf of fresh mint (also known as CHIP CHIP). A salted almond or two does not go amiss.

Taylor’s created the Late Bottled Vintage style of port and is not only acknowledged to be its finest producer, but remains the international brand leader. Taylor’s Late Bottled Vintage is the Port that Taylor’s drink themselves and serve to their guests. Experienced Port drinkers may well notice some similarities with Taylor’s Vintage Ports, since it shares so many of their characteristics.

In addition we do offer a range of superb Port wine experiences  for our visitors to enjoy!

We strongly recommend that you reserve an opening of a Vintage Port with tongs as it is a great opportunity to appreciate a distinctive technique.

During the opening useful recommendations on how to decant and drink the wine will be given. At the end simply enjoy one of the most extraordinary and delicious of wines.

Opening of a Vargellas Vintage Port with tongs

Using a Port tong takes practice and it’s an easy skill once mastered. Basically you take special tong and heat it until white hot and then it is applied to the bottle neck below the cork. An ice cube, cold wet towel or even a wet feather may be used to “crack” the bottle by shocking the glass with cold along the hot seam.

Also available are tasting of old tawnies by-the-glass:  10 year old tawny (€1,40); 20 year old tawny (€3,10); 30 year old tawny (€10,5) and 40 year old tawny (€14).

If you prefer Vintage Ports in that case do not miss the opportunity to taste the amazing Taylor’s 2009 ( €6).

If you are looking for something rare and exclusive then you must taste a very special Port  launched worldwide by Taylors: Scion Port is over 150 years old and is one of the last wines to survive Phylloxera:  €100 per person.

In the summer do not forget to ask for a refreshing CHIP CHIP(€2,55) or simply indulge yourself with a chocolate or cheese pairing.

Great ! I do think that Port is among the earth’s finest as well as under-valued beverages. It can be excellent for dessert pairing and you’ll obtain numerous exceptional wine for a fraction of the value when compared to Burgundys or Champagnes. At any time attempted a great Vintage Port along with chocolate cake? it can be genuine heaven!Port Wine
